Hawke's Bay Earthquake

On Tuesday the 3rd February, 1931 a massive Earthquake struck Hawke's Bay. This Earthquake is known as the deadliest Earthquake in the history of New Zealand. It struck at 10:45am, which meant a lot of people were out and about.

Dawn McCormick was with her mother at the time as they were shopping for new shoes in town. she was very young but still remembers the day very clearly. When the quake struck she was pulled away from her mother and slammed into the footpath. Her mother was calling out to her the whole time to go to her but every time she would get close, the power of the quake would pull her away again. Luckily they were not hurt, her mother only had scratched legs and broken finger nails from where she had clawed the concrete to try and get to Dawn.

Declan also experienced the frightening Earthquake. He was in a building when it happened, when he felt the shakes he ran to the doorway... BAM!! part of the building fell on top of him. While he was underneath all the broken building he was praying that someone would save him, he didn't want to be buried alive. After a while he could feel the building being pulled from him, he saw two men helping him. Once it was clear, he sat up and smiled at the men that helped him, he felt relieved.

Not only was the Earthquake deadly but it started a number of fires. This caused many buildings and houses to be lost.

9 students, 12 nurses, a group of road workers and others lost their lives, altogether 258 people died and many more were injured.

I can not imagine how horrifying it was for the people involved especially the little ones. I hope we don't have another one that is as deadly.

Hyde Train Crash

On the 4th of June, 1943, locomotive 80 782 crashed in Otago.
About 21 people lost their lives and 47 were injured.
The engineer of the train was Jack Corcoran. That day Jack was running late because he had been drinking that morning, so while he was driving the train he decided to speed.
When he arrived at the station some of the passengers noticed that the train had over shot the platform a bit.

When they left everything was okay but 17 minutes out from the station, the train came to a corner, but it was going too fast, the train tilted to one side, then it evened out but then it was finally sent off the tracks.

Jack Corcoran suffered with burns on his head because the boiler burst in the room he was in. Jack was charged with man slaughter and was sentenced to jail for 3 years. When he was released he worked in a factory but past away 5 years later.

We felt really sorry for all the people that lost their family and friends. We're still wondering why someone didn't pull the emergency break when they knew the train was going way too fast.

Lawn Bowls - Tuesday 5th May 2015

Our day started with a trip to the Ellerslie Bowling Club.
Matua Dudley drove us to the venue, the ride was smooth.
Mr Dawson's dad greeted us as we got there and introduced us all to the expert bowlers from the club. He explained to us that we needed to take our shoes off when we were on the green because the grass was very old and fragile, the lawn had been there since 1910!!
We were in groups of four and assigned to an expert. The leaders showed us how to bowl the ball correctly so that we didn't damage the lawn and also so that we could hit the target.
Some of us picked it up really quickly and connected with the target, which is a little white ball at the other end of the lawn, while the rest of us struggled. Some of us were too strong and the ball ended up going off the green, every bowl, which is not ideal.

We were very lucky to have this experience and look forward to playing lawn bowls again in the future.  Thanks Mr Dawson for organizing such an awesome trip.

"I thought it was fun because I learnt a new sport that I originally thought was just for old people".

"At first I thought I thought I was going to hate the trip, but once I got playing I really enjoyed it".

"I really enjoyed it because we don't have lawn bowls in Cambodia, so it was a new experience for me."
