Hyde Train Crash

On the 4th of June, 1943, locomotive 80 782 crashed in Otago.
About 21 people lost their lives and 47 were injured.
The engineer of the train was Jack Corcoran. That day Jack was running late because he had been drinking that morning, so while he was driving the train he decided to speed.
When he arrived at the station some of the passengers noticed that the train had over shot the platform a bit.

When they left everything was okay but 17 minutes out from the station, the train came to a corner, but it was going too fast, the train tilted to one side, then it evened out but then it was finally sent off the tracks.

Jack Corcoran suffered with burns on his head because the boiler burst in the room he was in. Jack was charged with man slaughter and was sentenced to jail for 3 years. When he was released he worked in a factory but past away 5 years later.

We felt really sorry for all the people that lost their family and friends. We're still wondering why someone didn't pull the emergency break when they knew the train was going way too fast.
